In an recently released poltical ad, Sen. John McCain essentially compares Sen. Barack Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, saying he is the No. 1 celebrity out there. I think the McCain campaign’s message in the ad is that Obama is more of a celebrity that a person ready to lead the country (I’ve not yet seen the commercial, I’ve just read about it). The Los Angeles Times wrote about the ad, which targets the daughter of two of the people who have contributed to his campaign, Rick and Kathy Hilton.
TO HOLLYWOOD it smacked of desperation.
That’s why the reaction to a new John McCain ad attempting to portray Barack Obama as a kind of mindless celebrity — likening him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears — drew collective yawns and shrugs of irritation from politically active members of the entertainment industry.
“I didn’t think McCain could look silly,” mused Norman Lear. “But that ad diminishes him and makes him look silly.”
