The Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and University of Kentucky Opera Theatre are presenting “La Boheme” this weekend at the RiverPark Center. The Kentucky Youth Chorale and the Owensboro Symphony Chorus are also scheduled to participate.
This is the second consecutive year that the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre has performed with the OSO. Last November’s “Mad About Opera” featured excerpts from “La Traviata,” “La Boheme” and “Carmen.”
Saturday’s night’s performance of “La Boheme” will be the OSO’s first full-length opera. The show will be performed in concert style, meaning both the singers and the symphony will be on stage together. The opera is being featured as “Italian Night at the OSO.” The OSO’s 2008-09 season’s theme is Global Journeys, and each performance features a different country or region.
“La Boheme” is about struggling artists living in the Latin Quarter of Paris in 1830, according to the OSO’s Program Notes on the show. Rodolfo, a poet, falls in love with Mimi, his downstairs neighbor who is a seamstress. The Broadway musical “Rent” was based on “La Boheme.”
The OSO and University of Kentucky Opera Theatre will present “La Boheme” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the RiverPark Center. Tickets are $33, $26 and $13. For more information, contact the OSO at 684-0661 or the RiverPark Center box office at 687-2787.
